Texas vs. Arkansas<\/strong>, Fayetteville, Arkansas, Saturday,\u00a0December 6, 1969<\/strong>\u00a0for the National Championship!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 1964 Arkansas Razorbacks were National Champions with Frank Broyles, Head Coach, Fred Marshall, qb, and, Bobby Crockett,e. They were 11-0 that year. Two other players on the 1964 team you’ve heard of are Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the 1969 Arkansas Razorbacks had Frank Broyles, Head Coach, Bill Montgomery (from Texas), quarterback, and his roommate Chuck Dicus, receiver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was the National Championship, The Crucial Showdown, the Battle of Giants, the Game of the Year, the Game of the Decade, the Game of the Century! This was the only place to be on the planet! This is the type of game forever burned into the memories of the winners & losers. This was college football at it’s best and it would complete the first 100 years of college football!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A nationally televised game in 1969 was a big deal. ABC announcers Chris Schenkel & Bud Wilkinson were doing the play by play. President Nixon flew in on Helicopter One.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve experienced some great football, baseball, and basketball games, both college and pro, regular season, playoffs and World Series.. But never ever will you experience anything like a Razorback Hog Call in Fayetteville. The Souie Pig is a distinctive sound. When the sound simultaneously hits the other side of the stadium, it’s practically whip lash time. Yes, you have to be there to experience it. It’s a Hog thing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Montgomery passed and passed. We scored in the first quarter. He passed for a touchdown in the third quarter. It was now 14-0 but it ain’t over yet!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then, the Longhorn quarterback James Street went back to pass from the Arkansas 42 yard line. Nobody open, he ran all the way! 14-6. Texas lines up. Not going to tie anything here. They’re going for the two pointer! The Longhorn quarterback scores! Now it’s 14-8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arkansas has the ball. We’ve driving to another touchdown. Nobody anywhere can hear anything. Not the people in the stadium, not in the city. It’s a fact that people in Tulsa could hear it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As with many memories from so long ago, this part becomes blurry. We passed into the end zone and it was intercepted. Texas ran plays and got somewhere near the 50 yard line. You know the setup…fourth down…a few minutes to play…can’t afford a punt with time running out….go for it….short yardage. Everybody knows it’s going to be a running play or a short pass. Someday I’d like to know the reaction of the Longhorn players in the huddle when they called the bomb!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rest they say is history…………<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The outcome wasn’t cheerie for Arkansas that day<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The score was 14-15 and no downs left to play<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

were all experienced that day<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Razorbacks would settle down<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

for the Championship another day<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
